Topic: Freedom: a philosophical analysis
When: Tuesday August 5th, 6-7:30pm
Where: Gunners Arms Tavern, 23 Lawrence St, Launceston
Philosophy in the Pub is a regular opportunity for members of the Launceston community to meet and discuss, in some depth, a philosophical topic of their own choosing. The event is hosted by philosophers from UTAS as part of the university’s ongoing engagement with the broader Tasmanian community.
The topic this month is ‘freedom’. We will examine both socio-political freedom and freedom of the will together with related assumptions and implications. So, we will cover topics such as metaphysical assumptions that either allow for or preclude freedom of the will, and implications for moral responsibility. We will also cover topics such as the distinction between positive and negative freedom & freedom of speech with respect to socio-political freedom.
