Brown Bag Seminar: Governing during an ocean climate crisis: Building integrative capacity

Event Date: 26 September, 2025
Start time: 12:00 pm

The UTAS School of Social Sciences welcome you to the Brown Bag Seminar 12-1pm this Friday, 26 Sep 25. The researchers, A.Prof Joanna Vince (CMS/UTAS) and Dr Maree Fudge (CMS/IMAS), will present the findings of a study on "Governing during an ocean climate crisis: Building integrative capacity".

Integrative capacity is essential for government agencies to design and implement effective integrated policies. Unlike other forms of policy capacity, it requires continuous adjustment and coherence across multiple issues, jurisdictions, and sectors. Vince et al (2024) developed an Integrative Capacity Framework (ICF), which identifies the key components agencies need to advance policy integration. In this presentation, the researchers present the findings of their study testing the ICF to cases of ocean governance in Australia and Canada, using semi-structured interviews and workshops with government agencies and stakeholders. The findings indicate the ICF can help agencies tailor integration efforts to their specific policy and political contexts, guiding more strategic design and investment, especially in complex areas such as oceans governance. This project is funded by the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Project Scheme.
