Event Date: 21 October, 2025
Start time: 1:00 pm

Title: "How researchers can support community in protection of Sea Country and justice informed research practices"

Presenter: Zoë Brittain (Deakin University)

Summary: Scientists and researchers in environmental and marine fields often aim to make their work relevant beyond academia, yet many remain hesitant to engage in advocacy. This talk reflects on my experience as a researcher supporting a community-led campaign against seismic testing in Southwest Victoria. It explores the valuable role researchers can play in amplifying community voices, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders—including environmental groups, Traditional Owners, and commercial fishers—and strengthening grassroots action. I also reflect on how this experience reshaped my research priorities and methods, grounding them more deeply in community needs and values.

Bio: Zoë Brittain is a PhD student at Deakin University, based at the regional Warrnambool campus. She currently works within the DeakinSeaweed group, focusing on people and seaweed (ethnophycology). Zoë holds dual Bachelor degrees in Environmental Science and Anthropology, and is currently based within the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. Beyond her academic work, she is an active member of her local community and is involved in grassroots movements focused on environmental and social justice.
