Bio

Ian works as a fisheries scientist in the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) within the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, where he is the lead editor the annual Fishery status reports. Ian is also the Australian representative and coordinator in the United Nations’ Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects. He has a particular interest in the translation of science into policy and legislation, with a particular focus on marine ecology, indigenous and commercial fisheries and climate change. Ian draws diverse scientific and policy experience through academia/research in coral reef ecology, fisheries and palaeoecology and through government work in the United States, Cambodia and Papua New Guinea.
