Title: Monitoring and Managing Coastal Areas: Challenges and Evidence-Based Solutions
Presenter: Dr Francisco Bravo (Universidad Adolfo Ibanez, Santiago, Chile)
When: Thurs 3rd Oct 2024, 3:00pm-4:00pm
Where: Flexspace (IMAS Salamanca) and Zoom https://utas.zoom.us/j/87838148283
Bio: Francisco’s professional and research interest are focused on the management, monitoring, and modelling of coastal processes, including natural and socio-economic dimensions. He aims to contribute with marine sciences, and the integration with other disciplines, to ensure the sustainable use of coastal resources for the benefit of future generations. He has worked actively in consulting and research projects in areas such as innovation and entrepreneurship in small scale fisheries, evaluation of environmental interactions of industrial activities, modelling of socioecological systems and ecosystem services in coastal areas, among others. Dr Bravo has a PhD in Oceanography from Dalhousie University (Canada) and completed his undergraduate degree in Marine Biology at Universidad Austral de Chile. He previously worked as a researcher for CSIRO Chile (2016-24) and is now an academic researcher at Universidad Adolfo Ibañez (Chile).
Summary: The coastal zones are dynamic ecosystems facing increasing pressures from human activities. Effective management of human activities in these areas requires a comprehensive understanding of human-environment interactions, the complexities of environmental and institutional management frameworks, and the influence of evolving conditions such as climate change. This talk will explore how scientific research, data-driven approaches, and monitoring techniques can inform the sustainable management of coastal areas. By highlighting real-world examples from Chile and other regions, we’ll illustrate how science-based solutions can address these pressing challenges, and discuss the obstacles encountered in their implementation.
Keywords: Coastal planning, aquaculture, climate change, whole-of-system modelling.
