Launceston Philosophy in the Pub

Event Date: 1 July, 2025
Start time: 6:00 pm

Topic: Equality: a philosophical analysis

When: Tuesday July 1st, 6-7:30pm

Where: Gunners Arms Tavern, 23 Lawrence St, Launceston

Philosophy in the Pub is a regular opportunity for members of the Launceston community to meet and discuss, in some depth, a philosophical topic of their own choosing. The event is hosted by philosophers from UTAS as part of the university’s ongoing engagement with the broader Tasmanian community.

This month we are taking our inspiration from the famous quote from George Orwell’s Animal Farm: “All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others”.  ‘Equality’ may be something that is presented as obtaining in many areas of contemporary life, from job opportunities to corporate or professional service provision to access to healthcare, education and justice. But is that really the case? And regardless of what is the case, what ought to be the case? And finally, what should our response to all this be?
