Bio

Mary is currently working for the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas)  in the recreational fisheries community engagement team as a community engagement specialist. She is enjoying applying her academic and theoretical training to the applied fisheries management domain. Mary’s background is in behavioural economics and compliance behaviour, completing her PhD in Economics in 2019 at the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics and the Centre for Marine Socioecology at the University of Tasmania. Her thesis explored the role of behavioural incentives on compliance behaviour in recreational fisheries management. She then worked for 5 years at CSIRO researching the human dimensions of global illegal fishing and marine pollution. She aims to contribute to academic and applied aspects of non-compliance and explore tools to improve reporting and encourage legal behaviour as well as explore the influence of bias and community buy-in within fisheries management.
